Understanding Sociolinguistics 

Sociolinguistics is a a field of sociolinguistics that concerns itself with the study of the relationship between language and society. Put another way, it is the study of language in relation to society. Sociolinguistics studies how varieties of language arise as a result of the existence of multiple social groups.

It investigates language, not as a structure but in terms of its practical usage. Sociolinguistics is both empirical and theoretical because it involves collection and analysis of data for result, and it often required critical thinking. It studies how membership of certain social groups influence the language of individuals.

Sociolinguistics analyzes language in social contexts through certain outputs including; Bilingualism, Multilingualism, Code mixing and Code switching, Speech community, Interference, Pidgin and Creole, Interference, Language and Culture etc.,.

As a field that concerns itself with the study of language use in social contexts, sociolinguistics looks at the language of social groups including; Gender, Age, Education, Socio-economic class, Profession, etc.,. 

Sociolinguistics is as a result of the fact that every society requires the use of language for communication as man can not coexist in an environment without communication since man is considered a social animal. The result being the establishment of language for communication, and the social contexts in which man uses language as a result of belonging to certain social groups is the preoccupation of sociolinguistics.
